Missing Link Initiative

The Missing Link Initiative is a minority- and women-run nonprofit organization serving young people in the Greater Hartford area of Connecticut. Our mission is to help young people regain stability by providing foundational tools, supportive relationships, and a safe space to grow.

We believe that strong communities are built through meaningful relationships. Through interactive workshops, we help participants learn how to establish healthy boundaries, build healthier relationships, communicate effectively, and develop the skills needed to navigate life with greater confidence. We create a safe environment that encourages conversation, connection, and interaction. Through demonstration, teamwork, and hands-on learning, participants are encouraged to actively engage in the process.

The Missing Link Initiative was created from experience. Founder Toshi Countryman-Bey drew from her own life experiences, those of her peers, and her experiences working with young people to envision an organization that could create a lasting impact.

Having witnessed the effects that substance use, particularly during the crack era, had on her community, as well as the resulting loss of leadership and stability, Toshi recognized the need for intentional intervention and support.

She also understood firsthand what it meant to grow up too soon and miss important developmental steps along the way. These experiences shaped her understanding of the challenges many young people face and the importance of having positive guidance, healthy relationships, and safe spaces to learn and grow.

The COVID-19 pandemic further intensified these challenges, contributing to increased disconnection and isolation. These experiences reinforced the need for The Missing Link Initiative—a place where young people can reconnect, develop meaningful relationships, learn practical life skills, and build a stronger foundation for their future.
